The legality of residence parking

I know there have been various q's related to parking here, but can't find an answer to this:

Is making residence parking by local councils actually legal? I pay my road tax to the DVLA, how can the council then tell me that they are giving preferential treatment to someone elses car, just because they have a house nearby?

I realise I'm being a bit pedantic here but I can't quite make the conection.

Local authorities were given the powers to make orders restricting parking to resident permit holders under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

Road tax just allows you access to the highway, it doesn't however give you the right to park your car on the road.

The Councils are fully within the rights and normally these things are triggered by residents getting fed up with commuters parking in residential areas and requesting permit only areas.

If it is of any consolation to you we have to pay our council �50 a year for a resident parking badge (�75.00 when you first take one out)

Our local council is in the process of introducing it, I don't want it where I live although like you I will pay for it if I have to but they are also putting it where everyone parks for work which will add about �75 a month in parking fees to everyones monthly outgoings.(by having to go into the multistorey). They said they had had overwhelming support for it but in fact out of 1740 surveys sent out to residents only 300 responded and about 200 said yes, which actually in my mind isnt overwhelming support! But hey ho ;-)
