If using your cellular data while roaming will normally result in additional charges, you may be charged extra by your mobile provider for using WhatsApp while roaming.
However, provided you have Wi-Fi internet access and current WhatsApp service, WhatsApp should be free to use over a Wi-Fi connection. Make sure your data roaming is disabled, though.

Whatsapp is a message sender. However it allows you to attach all sorts of data files and send them too. It needs Internet access, either from your mobile data allowance or via WiFi.
Viber I've downloaded but not used, it seemed to need my contacts on it also ? It seems to be more of a call application, so isn't the same thing as Whatsapp. It's probably more like you are looking for. I have no idea if the both work internationally but I would assume so.

Hi,
I have both WhatsApp and Viber. As already said WhatsApp is for messaging and I use it regularly to message my sister in South Africa (no charge). Although I haven't used Viber for calls yet I have a friend who used it to ring her friends in Turkey whilst she was holidaying in New York and another friend who was using it to ring from his home to a friend on holiday in Prague.
When you download the Viber app anyone in your contacts list who is also using Viber will show as a separate Viber contact automatically, and you should be able to ring them with no charge. If you want to ring some one not in your Viber contacts it would be best to get them to download the app as well. I have an S3 and have had no problems, although my younger sister (not the one in SA) has a Windows HTC and the Viber app appears slightly different on her phone.
