My, rather old, Epson printer refuses to work with my new HP, windows 8.1, 64-bit, laptop. I have tried downloading windows 8 drivers from the Epson website but still no joy. Time for a new one methinks. My question, therefore, is... can anyone recommend a good all in one printer for under £100, that will work with windows 8.1 without the need to download extra drivers from the company website. It also needs to be compatible with XP (my desktop is XP). And preferably have individual ink cartridges. Oh and if it could be fairly easy to set up that would be a bonus..I'm not very techie.
Many thanks in advance.

I have had a similar problem; had to change from XP to Windows 7 and my very good Epson scanner will not work and Epson do not have a driver to suit anymore. My Epson printer was playing up and refusing to accept non-Epson cartridges, of which I have a many, so despite this and having read lots of reviews I bought a Canon MG6350 all in one printer scanner and copier, and I am delighted with it. It was easy to install giving step by step instructions. You can connect it to your computer either by a usb cable or by , as I have, your Wi Fi router, which means you can place it anywhere in your house and use it via several things; laptops, phones etc.. Extremely good value at around £100. I am no techie myself, suggest you check it out on the internet.
PS, I'm not sure if this machine will work with XP - check it out - but I'm afraid your are going to have to ditch XP anyway. Sadly, if your computer is getting on, you might have to consider a new computer as well. Windows is such a pain in the .... and I'm saving up for an Apple mac at next change.

Than you Khandro, I'll definitely check the Canon out.
My old faithful XP desktop isn't connected to the Internet now that I have my shiny new laptop :) so I'll probably leave it as it is for now.

Thank you for your advice.

My Epsom SX-215 printer-scanner-copier works perfect with windows 7, got change out of £50 at Tesco. Was running Vista when I bought it - that needed the installation CD. When I upgraded my PC to one running windows 7 it found it by itself. I will stick with Epsom as the refills are a fraction of the price of others. Lexmark, for example, it is cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy an ink refill.

The printer is Epson Stylus sx235w. My laptop is HP Pavilion 15-n267sa. Not sure about the desktop without going upstairs and starting it up, I think it's only service pack 2 though. I can manage without the desktop printing as long as I can get the laptop working. I did get the 8.1 upgrade from Epson but it still won't work properly. It recognises the printer and it attempts to print but not very successfully.....only half lines, I don't know how else to describe it.
I tried using my old vista laptop, which I've always printed from before and that was the same, so I'm thinking the problem is with the printer.
Anyway...thank you all for your answers.

Re the poor printing - I've an Epson SX435W & on 2 occasions the print heads have needed 5 or 6 runs through the cleaning process before it suddenly kicks in & prints properly.

I get my non-branded cartridges for less than £1 each, have had only one failure from them, so using the extra ink to run the cleaning procedure is no great hardship.
