Mu darling hubby is 50 at New Year and I have started saving to take him away for his birthday. But I am unsure where to take him. I was thinking about a week in the sun or should I do a city break like Praque, Berlin, Krakow or Amsterdam some where like that or maybe Dublin, I just don't know any suggestions please?

thank you everyone keep the suggestions coming.

I'm saving to take mine to see the Northern Lights, his birthday is in December, just haven't decided where to see them yet.
Well I won't be making any more suggestions, after you ridiculed my suggestion of Paris !!! How was I supposed to know you'd been there ???
At New Year the only place to go is Edinburgh!!

Viv38 I am so sorry I didn't mean to ridicule your suggestion it was a very welcome one. Please accept my apologies.
Toronto/Boston in the latter part/early part of the year---wonderful. Proper weather, ice, snow, plus hot dogs, fish, and ethnic meals to die for.

i am worried now that I have upset Viv38
Don't be. Viv is being a bit sensitive. There was no ridicule there, only fond remembrance as far as I can see.
Mum....don't fret !!! Hope you go somewhere nice....Edinburgh ..my home town I know but brilliant over New year....honest !! X
Mumstheword, I read her post as being tongue in cheek.

I absolutely agree with BGB's Boston suggestion, I took my OH there for his 40th and had a fab time, it's such a lovely city with loads to do.

Thanks guys Edinburgh sounds promising. Any recommendations for hotel by castle preferred x
I haven`t been to Edinburgh for eons but I remember that the Caledonian Hotel was pretty well thought of. It`s part of the Waldort Astoria group now. Might be worth checking out if you want something special. It`s not next to the castle - it`s on Princess Street but that is where it`s all going on anyway, especially at NY.

If I had to stay in any hotel in Edinburgh I would certainly try this one...Located on North Bridge and a 2/3 minute walk from The Royal Mile and Princes Street... Whatever you decide Mum I hope you both have a great time x ( let us know what you decide)
