Selby was awful on Sunday. His highest break in 17 frames of snooker was 62. I dare say I would have got a higher break than that.

If Selby was awful on Sunday and still came out of it only three frames down, I guess you can say that O'Sullivan missed his chance then. Selby deserved to win, and I think it's a good thing for the game to see O'Sullivan dethroned. Last year's victory here, while fantastic and entertaining, felt like it was a bit embarrassing for the rest of the field. No-one even was able to take a session off him, let alone a match, and he'd entered the match on barely a few weeks' practice. Was lovely to watch him in full flow like he was last year and in 2012, but to see someone stand up to him should help to freshen the game up a bit.

I think people have said that if Ronnie isn't playing, then winning the tournament doesn't mean as much. In that case, Selby is as deserving a champion as you can get.

I used to play the game at local league level (highest break on a large table - 75) and i thoroughly enjoyed the final. Much better than a one sided hollow victory. (Having bet £5 on either of the two to win 18-15 (13/2 O'Sullivan, 9/1 Selby) it didn't really matter to me who won.

As the 'Rocket' said in his interview, "he outfought and out-thought me."

I’m completely with Ken4155 on this. Snooker is not all about 130 breaks and potting balls. In fact a match that consists only of that type of play is about as boring as it gets. The skill in snooker is positional play when there is nothing much on - i.e. safety. The clue is in the name - it’s not called “potting”. People wanting to see exhibitions of potting should watch a pool tournament. Over 35 frames of snooker luck evens itself out and Mark Selby demonstrated superb skill and resolve, especially bearing in mind he was five frames adrift at times early on in the match. He beat O'Sullivan 13-4 yesterday and not many people can claim that.

Er…er… so he won the world championship by being bloody awful Roy? I’ll give it a crack myself next year. I’m sure I could be far more awful.

I may be wrong, roy, but I’d hazard a guess and say I doubt you’d have made it to the final.

Strange that some commentators here suggest that the match was boring and back that up my citing slow play as their evidence. I think it’s generally accepted that the most exciting final of recent years was 1985 Davis vs. Taylor. That match went on until just before 12:30am and took almost fifteen hours. This is more than two hours longer than yesterday’s match although they played only three more frames.

Let’s hope next year they alter the format and make all the matches the best of three (with perhaps five frames for the final). Double points for breaks over 50, a bonus frame for breaks over 100 and ten points deducted every time a player fails to pot a ball. Should make it far more exciting !!!

Some of you don't seem to want to say it as it is. The final was not of the standard I would have expected (my opinion)

I think that's fair, it wasn't the highest quality final. Again, the last frame of Monday afternoon springs to mind, when for a moment it seemed as if both players had forgotten how to pot! A crucial, crucial frame and Ronnie should have potted the pink and gone into the evening a frame up. Might have made a huge difference.

That's apples and oranges, though. The way that Selby played in the semi-final was what was needed to win that game and would have been next to useless against O'Sullivan in the final.

O'Sullivan's comment that Selby out-thought him and out-fought him is spot on - there's no other way he could have won! His safety place was exemplary and some of his positional shots were among the best I've ever seen.

I think some posters on here appear to think that the final ought to have been an exhibition match of trick-shots!

if it finishes 10-7 today then that will be incredible for Selby considering how he has played. For Ronnie O'Sullivan to only be ahead 10-7 after the first day would be considered a failure for him after he has dominated the match.
