I don't wished to be thought of as sexist. Consequently, if I am called to meet H.M. the queen, will it be acceptable to address her as Elizabeth, Liz or perhaps....Hi Queenie.

I can't see why the term 'Miss' in the schoolteacher context should not be a title of respect in the same way as 'Sir'. 'Ma'am' would be more equivalent but that is not the convention.

It seems that the professor has projected her own insecurities onto the situation.

schools run by women used to be called Dame schools, which did put them on a par with Sirs. But as in many areas of life, females have been subtly downgraded. I can guess how much male teachers would like being called "Mister".

My teachers were either nuns or monks, therefore they were addressed as either Sister, Father or Brother depending on their gender and status.
