does anyone know if I have to take out Residency in Spain to benefit from the National Health system here?
Surely being his wife is enough to qualify?

You don't say where "here" is. Residency will primarily be relevant in the country where you seek medical attention. If you are being treated in a country where you are a temporary visitor then there will be no record accessible and you will be a "new" and "foreign" patient. It is my understanding that throughout the EU reciprocal arrangements apply whereby you will in every EU country receive the same approach as any local would wherever you are. The only requirement is that you must be able to prove your entitlement to treatment at home, wherever that is.

My husband is Spanish and I am English.
We have a house in both countries but would like to spend most of the time here in Spain.I don't know if I need to become resident here so that I can see a doctor should I need to do so.

Yes, you must:
From 28 March 2007, Royal Decree 240/07 requires that all EU citizens planning to reside in Spain for more than 3 months should register in person at the Oficina de Extranjeros in their province of residence or at designated Police stations. You will be issued an A4 printed Residence Certificate stating your name, address, nationality, NIE number (Número de Identificación Extranjeros) and date of registration.

Under the new rules, EU citizens applying for residency in Spain may be required to produce evidence of sufficient financial means to support themselves (and dependants). Applicants may also be asked for proof of private or public healthcare insurance.

After 183 days in Spain you become a tax, resident Automatically, there is a difference between resident and tax resident. I would have thought that you would qualify for Spanish NHS automatically with a Spanish Husband. How do the rules apply to your Husband when you are both in the UK?.
