My son aged 30 suffers from angry looking red spots/eruptions on his neck and back (luckily his face seems OK). Does anyone know something to help? Should he add/remove something from his diet?

Since it is only on his neck and back, could it be something to do with washing powder- unlikely I know, but the enzymes could be irritating his skin? It does sound hormonal though- just too much oil being produced, like in adolescence. Because he is 30, the Doc will surely have something for him.
It may be in-grown hairs. Have a look at www.beautyflash.co.uk. There is a brand called Medik8 that do a product called Ingrow Rescue. Also, Dermalogica do very good acne treatments. They do Medicated Clearing Gel, which is great for unblocking pores when used regularly.
i would also recommend changing laundry powder - go for one of those sensitive skin ones.
Also getting sun light on the affected area can be very effective, maybe try a sunbed every week or so ... though a trip to the docs would prob be a good idea too.
as an aside i'm allergic to milk and my girlfriend is allergic to wheat (gluten) when we eat too much of these we both end up suffering from nasty big red allergy spots (not like normal zits with a white head) - so you could ask your son to cut out milk for a week or two and see if there is an improvement, and then wheat (and all the other gluten containing foods) - might be worth a try
