What do ABers think of my new law that I think should be adopted with immediate effect. All drivers caught driving whilst using a mobile phone should have their vehicle removed from their control & impounded & sold by auction, the proceeds to go to charity. It is obvious that if their 'phone was taken from them it is easy for them to get a replacement. I feel that if this became law it would have more effect & would inevitably lead to more road safety & selfish motorists with no thought for anyone but themselves would be removed from our roads making it safer for the rest of us.
Whilst I like your idea Ron, it's doubtful it'll get off the ground? I have read that being on the phone whilst driving is as dangerous as drink driving so I think the penalties should be the same, a ban.
I'd find it easier to replace my car than my phone- all those contacts! But yes, they should be much stricter. I see so many people doing it on a daily basis.
But the problem is that so few get caught that the deterant aspect has become watered down as the increasing usage demonstrates. It needs looking at again and some remedial action taken.
Living in a country where about 75% of drivers are either texting or have their phones glued to their ears while driving I would love to see a serious consequence enforced.
//But its legal to use a cellphone whilst driving...as long as you dont hold it. //
it is. but in my company, there have been issues in the case of drivers who have had accidents (howsoever minor) when hands-free mobiles have been in use. Company policy says don't do it; result, dismissal for gross misconduct.
