It is indeed Che Guevara who achieved imortality as a folk hero of hippy radicals in the 1960's. Without going into the ins and outs of his beliefs and actions, it's fair to say that Guevara is remembered romantically as a handsome revolutionary who died fighting for his beliefs - if he'd look like Osama Bin Laden, he'd be forgotten history by now! People do love to attatch rmance and nobility to physical attraction - to digress a little - everyone is apalled when seal pups are clubbed to death - big eyes, soft fur and so on - the fact that the would bite your fingers off if you tried to give them the cuddle they seem to want is a side isue. The point is - if they looked like preying mantises, would anyone care less if they were smashed over the head? Romance and attraction - step forward Princess Diana.
Physical attraction aside, why don't people admire Fidel Castro in the same way as they do Guevara? After all, Guevara was Castro's right-hand man, and they fought for the same ideals and beliefs. He's seen as some sort of revolutionary figure simply because he died. People seem to forget that had he lived, he would hold the ideals and beliefs that Castro currently holds. Yet no-one really likes Castro!
it's true Ernesto has achieved a romantic status, you can even get his t-shirt in high street stores,as oppossed to the ethnic/hippy types of shop. It does grate me a little to see so many wear his face and not know the first thing about him. If he were still alive it would be impossible to say wether he would still be a buddy to dear old castro. His warped view of communisim/socialisim is well passed it's sell by date, not to mention all the human rights issues within cuba. Che was assassinated in 1967 I think, where the world was such a different place. My late father idolised che so much that when I was born in 1969 his christened me with the middle name "Guevara". Not sure anymore wether I should be proud of this or not. Given revalations regarding che's alleged involvement with the CIA.
