Amoxcillan/glandular Fever

I am taking 500mg of Amoxcilan for a supposed throat infection. I suspect I may have glandular fever and insisted on a blood test on Friday which my GP was against saying I was too old for this condition. I have had Glandular Fever when I was around 39yrs old.

Every time I look online about Glandular Fever it says do not take Amoxcilan but from all I can see it may cause a skin rash. Has anybody had this experience ?

I was taking Penicillin AV last week but felt quite ill on it so swapped for Amoxcillan.

boxy... Yes stopped the Pencillan AV after 3 days as I felt really unwell on it. Left it a day then started the 5 day course of Amoxcillan.

Methyl, or sqad, if still there- could you please explain why amoxicillin wouldn't have the penicillin side-effects?

boxy..I just felt really unwell on it....I was taking 500mg four times a day. It may have been that this throat infection was making me feel so bad, but I blamed it on the meds. When I stopped taking it, I felt a bit better.


Methyl.....I stopped the meds and phoned up for Amoxcillan as I know I could take them. Our GPs are useless.

pixie........from what I can gather.........Towie thought that the "generalised symptoms would clear more quickly with Amoxyciilin.

She is not saying that the "generalised symptoms" are due to the side effects of the penicillin.

That is how i read it.

That is my idea of a rubbish GP..

If a patient has adverse reaction to penicillin then they will have the same adverse reaction to Amoxycillin.

Thank you, sqad. My nephew just been told allergic to penicillin. I'd thought amoxicillin would be dubious too x

That is just what i said in my post above

Pix if your nephew is a teenager ....
then you may wish to test for glandular fever

as in teenagers a rash after amoxil may not be indicative in any way of an allergy - see above.

Thanks both. He's 8. We aren't sure if allergy is genuinely to penicillin or a skin rash due to the bacterial infection that required penicillin. They won't do allergy tests- so trial and error, i presume.

pixie.....^^^^^...you make a very good point.

Skin rashes are more likely due to the organism rather than the antibiotic.

Thank you x GP said obviously penicillin allergy. He has had penicillin in past no problem (i know doesn't prove not allergic now), but we weren't 100% with his view.

TBH your GP probably thinks "patients are useless" much the same way you think he's useless :) you have self-diagnosed with glandular fever, but are still expecting him to prescribe you antibiotics (which would be no good for your self diagnosis)
