Just a thought - Perhaps you could use the juice of a lemon when washing it. Leave it in soak, then rinse well.

Get a stain removing soap block, work well into the fibers to get a lather but dont scrub, leave to soak for a couple of hours preferably outdoors, then lightly sponge to rinse 2 or 3 times until suds have gone.
