Not sure where this one should lie in the AB topics list, Arts, Society and Culture so it's here to hit the biggest chance of any one who studied Latin seriously....

I need a wee translation for a wedding next weekend at which I am the MC. There's no vicar present at the reception, so it will fall on me to bring them to order (160 pax) and kick the dinner off. So I thought about a grace....could ask my goddaughter who read Latin and Greek, but then if I could get it in place earlier, that would be great.

The proposed text.

"God bless the Bride and Groom as they will, no doubt, need it. God bless the food as we are all starving, God bless the wine as, I don't know about you, but I need a glass. God bless friendship and family."

Many thanks in advance.

I'm a she... Thanks for the compliments, folks. I did teach a bit of Latin aeons ago, but never without a large dictionary to check, and I can't find the right one (Lewis and Short) online. Peter Pedant, I think I'd stick with Deus - that's OK in church Latin. I think you're right about the subjunctive with quia, so that would make the verbs 'sit' and esuriemus - or...

Thank you so much between you two....both should be teachers (magisters?).

Did you both study Latin or Classics at Uni?

Peter Pedant, I think I'd stick with Deus - that's OK in church Latin.

I think you're right about the subjunctive with quia, so that would make the verbs 'sit' and esuriemus - or is it esuriamus? Perhaps change quia to quod, which avoids the problem though isn't quite so nice.
Your suggestion of virum uxoremque is brilliant; I couldn't decide which nouns to use, and those are much better. I'm not sure where you'd put the Horace quotation?

Pixie, que is definitely on the end of the second word.

DTcwordfan, that would make it - subject to further correction - in the order in which you gave it :

Benedicat Deus virum uxoremque, quod certe necessarium erit;
Benedicat Deus cibum, quod nos omnes esurimus;
Benedicat Deus vinum, quod mihi - fortasse etiam nobis - nunc necessitas est;
Benedicat Deus amicitiam familiamque.

Someone may have better ideas. Please tell me there are not going to be any Latin scholars at the reception?

much better idea DTC talk bloody English m8
I'm with Bernie....my first marriage to a protestant in a Catholic Church was dire... in Latin with pointed translation from the sniffy priest for the "non catholics" present.....

Flipping service lasted longer than the marriage....x
Brill TH

my only claim to fame is Elegiacs by Gallus, JRS 1979 -
I dug them up rather than wrote the paper.

Sorry for getting your gender wrong, tearinghair, amiss of me not to check it. Well done anyway. One classics graduate (Durham and a 1st) will be present....Four lines and a verbal translation to bring the minions to order, that's all gness - the wedding isn't in Latin...perhaps in Norwich Cathedral but this one's in the countryside and it's Norfeck as well.......

Thank you all for your translation skills - much impressed.
Thanks for the Best Answer! A long time since I had one of those.
I'm a bit nervous about the Classics graduate from Durham...if he/she queries a couple of the word endings, my excuse is that it's Late Latin not Classical.... enjoy the wedding, and best wishes to the bride and groom.

No need to be, tearinghair, like all good Romans, she enjoys her wine, champagne and vodka/tequila.

She's a (skilled) lawyer in the City and hardly uses it now...despite the pressures of life professionally, she's a real sweetie.

This is her younger bro marrying and he and his wife to be made me MC...(the nutcases). More seriously, my old man started him off on his rugby career, aged 3. He ended up playing for the Crusaders in Christchurch (half of the All Blacks team) but sustained a very nasty injury that probably has killed his aspirations for the Premier Division. He has qualified as an accountant, his wife-to-be having worked with my goddaughter in the rarefied pressure of being employed with a major legal company.
I agree with Bernie. Why? Who is this about? You ... or the newlyweds?

It's called bringing a room into order for the kick-off of a wedding breakfast with a little fun at the outset, nothing more than that. I ask you; I certainly didn't expect such a catty remark like that - and, knowing bernie, I would disassociate him from that comment of yours. Christus Jesu Benedicat, or is it too much cherry juice this evening?!
sorry DTcwf, typo in the second version: nobis should read vobis. (it still makes sense, but means 'us' not 'you').
well, I agree with Naomi. ( I don't drink alcohol )
I'll ignore your rudeness, DTC. It wasn't intended to be catty .... simply saying that something like that would come across to me as somewhat pretentious....
Question Author
ta, tearinghair.....I'm really pissed off with naomi's remark....grrrr. (I'll get over it!)
naomi wish i could give you the best answer 1st person to agree with me on here xxx lol
DTC calm down whatever you do it will be great m8
Question Author
Your remark came across as incredibly rude, naomi, so look at yourself first.
i'm on a large martell i've just poured you one m8
Your choice.

I'm off spirits but thanks, bernie.....
