Walking Pole Won't Retract...

I have a Brasher walking pole where you twist the segments to loosen them and adjust the height. It's been at the same height so long that it seems to be stuck there. Either that or I can't get sufficient grip to shift them. Any suggestions?

They were away for the day and I was borrowing their lawn mower. The dog in their garden nearly had the seat out of my trousers. ;-)

the dog was only trying the hind-lick manoeuvre.
sandy I remember thinking some time ago that my own poles were stuck, till I remembered that it is the metal pole you twist, and not the plastic cover type thing !!
