i need the words to say sorry to my brother-in-law on the loss of his Mum a few days ago. She was in her 90's and had been quite ill for a while and also had dementia. I have written down a few things but most sound a bit pompous or old fashioned,or even condescending. Help needed, Thanks

I echo what Pixie has said about the life span of the deceased, it can be hurtful to be on the receiving end of, well they had a good innings, or, it was a happy release. These are left to the bereaved if they want to say them. Although this lady as old and had been ill for a while she was still the world to him, I would imagine ( as mums are ) so a few thoughts of your own , with the offer of a chat when ready would be lovely.
