What Has Happened To Truecrypt?
Last night the open source disk encryption program TrueCrypt was effectively taken down.
Personally I don't think the story we are getting is the truth but I would like to hear what you think has happened.

It has long been rumoured that the NSA either
(a) has found a way of getting around TrueCrypt's security ; or
(b) are actually the people behind TrueCrypt, which was developed by them to give users a false sense of security.
Any free product, where the people behind it are unknown, is bound to carry some risks. If you want something more reliable . . .

Truecrypt recently underwent an independent audit and was found to be "sloppy but secure".
I suspect the NSA has gotten to the developers and used some kind of leverage to make them take it down. NSA, CIA and FBI have been particularly annoyed that they have been stymied from getting into TrueCrypt volumes.
Two odd things stand out. The reference to ending it because XP had ended. This makes no sense as the program works right through to Windows 8, not to mention other platforms.
Secondly they have directed users to BitLocker. Edward Snowdon revealed the extent to which Microsoft cooperates with the NSA. There is no doubt whatsoever that there is an NSA back door into BitLocker. There is no way these guys would have recommended it unless under duress.
