Hi,

I am tracing my family history, and have found that one of my great-grandfathers is listed on the census for 1891 aboard the HMS Seagull, but the only information i can find about a Royal Naval vessel called Seagull was a Plover class wooden gun vessel, from 1867-71 and this was sold in 1887. So i presume it cannot be this one, was there another one with the same name after that? I am trying to find a picture and some information, he also served on HMS Royal Oak and HMS Minotaur and i have found pictures of them. So any information of a web-site especially with pictures would be much appreciated, of the Seagull.

There is also a list of monuments in Portsmouth in 'Janes Fighting Ships of WW1' that lists the Seagull lost as above in 1918

There was an HMS Seagull which entered into service on 31 May 1889. She was converted to a minesweeper in 1908 and lost in 1918 in the collision mentioned by nickmo above. Here is a photograph of HMS Seagull which is labelled "pre 1896".
