No, you don't need any documents if you tax your car at a Post Office, and you have the reminder from DVLA. It SAYS you do, but we retaxed ours last week, and the lady just wanted the payment. All the other details (insurance and MOT)are on the database, so if you aren't listed as having hem, then no disc will be issued. It's all to do with fraud prevention. In October...

In October 2014, you won't need a tax disc at all as they are being phased out. You will pay to be licensed though.

Soph 01......As someone else has pointed out, it's ALL electronic now. They scan the barcode on your renewal form, take your payment, and that's it. No need for any documents any more.
If you aren't insured, or don't have an MOT ( if needed), then the
Post Office will not issue a disc.
The police now have systems linked to national ANPR cameras, and can tell immediately if a vehicle has no tax,
insurance or MOT.
Also, from October, when selling a vehicle, the seller will have to return any disc still held for a refund. It will be illegal to sell it with the car. The new owner has to apply for tax in their own name. Fraud prevention again.
Good news, and will help to get the uninsured, untaxed and unlicenced scroats off the road.
