Discworld

Hi, some friends have a really bright 9-year-old son. He always has his nose in a book. He's done the entire Harry Potter oeuvre several times and he has dozens and dozens of other books in their house.

It's his birthday next week and I'd like to buy him something he's not seen before and that will keep him going for a good while. Are Terry Pratchett's Discworld books likely to be suitable for somebody his age?

As he seems to be a bookworm, then I'd say yes.
Terry Pratchett also does some books for children...The amazing Maurice and his educated rodents is one (I think) so you could play safe and get him one of the children's ones to start with then work up.

My son (10) read all the Harry Potter ones. He also likes David Walliams and Wimpy Kid (Jeff Kinley?). Just finished Hunger Games trilogy, which is also very popular with all his friends at school.

He might also like the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer, maybe some Darren Shan, the Troubletwisters series by Garth Nix, the Young Bond series by Charlie Higson.

I think yes. Most of the humour will be understood.
Good to read them in order though, if possible. Then you get introduced to characters as they appear.

Definately recommend Terry Pratchett.

As already suggested, reading them in order is a good idea, but you could opt for the alternative groupings, eg. the witches, the night watch
