I think it's the same principle that allows us to lie on a bed of nails but results in a nasty injury if we lay on top of one upright nail
lie not lay
That's quite right...

Pressure is the application of force over a particular area. In mathematical terms, pressure is equal to force divided by area. With more force comes more pressure, and with more area comes less pressure.
i only got as far as one toothpick the balloon burst !!
I'm now reminded of an elephant in stilettos vs a barefoot elephant :-)

It would wow on BGT!
I'm not allowed balloons since the incident at Customs...

I have understood what you are explaining me but i am unable to make a correct laguage for it.. can you help me in making the language too??
Mamya has anwered the question. Take a single toothpick and apply a given force and burst the balloon. Take 100 toothpicks and apply the same force as before. The force from each toothpick will be 100th of the force from the single toothpick and the balloon remains whole.. hopefully!
One will be enough. A load of pricks is too much for anyone.... :-)
I would observe the balloon deforming.
The reason being the toothpicks are pressing on the side of it, and it is flexible.
Can I take them out of the packet?
