Should religion be banned in state supported schools ?

Religion is frequently the most divisive factor in society , should it therefore be left to parents to make independent arrangements outside schools.
In that way children could learn to live together in a neutral school environment.

For years we have been brain washing our children to follow one faith out of hundreds. Not one of which can be Proved to be anything more than the myths of yesteryear.

Faith schools, as in Birmingham are examples of this virus being paid for by us all .

We don't officially teach party politics in state schools , so why emphasise
certain faiths. The present government's policy of encouraging faith schools will turn us into another Northern Ireland.

Can I just add that we're not religious, the village school just happens to be c of e. My kids have different views on religion (one thinks we are god's pets) but they know a little about lots of religions which I think is healthy.
Yep, get rid of it. There is no need for a school yo be religious.
I think it should be banned. We went to Sunday School as children then to Church for morning service and when we got older to the evening service as well only if we wanted to. (Mum and Dad had the day to themselves more or less). We were presented with Bibles and taught the Scriptures in sunday classes and lessons to take home. So if the parents want children to learn about their God they should attend church. I pity the Muslim kids they get beaten up if they don't learn quickly enough.

tonyav Your answer interests me ! Are you saying you are an Atheist or an Agnostic ? Unless you are ,IMO , I would say you have been influenced or brain washed ( call it what you will ) . I certainly was ! It's a part of our 'growing up ', and unless we are exposed to alternative beliefs with equal emphasise we naturally accept what we are told.
It wasn't until I was in my 30s that I realised what , IMO, nonsense religion really is , and it's only in recent years that I believe it is dangerous nonsense. Millions have died and suffered in the name of religion.
Glad you said don't officially teach politics.
I really do feel that NATURE is my god.
i can see it, feel it , and hear it all around me.
When I went to school we had morning prayer and a hymn. We also had Religious instruction. In those days we were predominently Christian/jewish children. There were some Catholics but we all attended the lessons as far as I know, there may have been some exceptions. There were no foreign children at all Asian Chinese or African, Todays multicultural mix is much different and in view of that any lesson in religion would have to be an all encompassing tutorial covering all religions throughout the school terms.

No...perhaps schools could fill the extra hours with lessons on programming, maths, English, languages etc.
Pusskin that is somewhat how I feel about religion. Not someone on a white cloud with harps and books of rights and wrongs. But a powerful entity that I can't describe.
That is how it was taught a few years ago.
Why political correctness? Children do that more naturally than adults.

pusskin I like your post it is based on using our senses not wishful thinking .
Naturally? Who tells them that a word is not acceptable?
They seem to accept what's around them. Prejudices are learnt later.
askyourgran, modeller, I'm agreeing to all that.
Nature is a very powerfull thing in my mind, never religion.

Their peers will teach them words, and their parents will give them guidance on what is and isn't socially acceptable.

With some kids, the roles are reversed, and they will assume words which are generally not socially acceptable, from their parents.
yes they should, they won't however.
It should be banned from ALL schools not just state supported ones.

I agree that it should be phased out but I'd be inclined to make it a natural process of becoming increasingly irrelevant, rather than actively trying to ban it.
If schools teach about religion rather than push one flavour, then it is fine they tackle the subject.
