We're trying to plan our summer holiday, but we can't afford much this year. The children are 9 and 11, we don't mind camping but don't want to travel for more than about 8 hours (door to door) as we only have a week. It could be this country or abroad, somewhere where the kids will have things to do. The popular holiday destinations (ie Balaerics, Greece are too hot for us in the summer) Any ideas please? Thanks.

I've been camping in France last year, that was really lovely.
There's usually lots of children on European Camping sites, so they'll be happy.

Actually camping near Canterbury with my then 12 year old step-daughter was great, too.
We only stayed for a long weekend, but they had so many tours (the Ghost Tour we went on), and things to see, that I would have loved to stay longer.

And the site had a swimming pool.

Yes, I agree France has some lovely camping sites and they have everything a child could wish for.

Don't know where you live lizwizz but I think North Yorkshire, Cleveland and Northumberland are wonderful counties for a holiday. Not too many people, beautiful beaches, wonderful countryside and loads of really lovely castles which kids just love. It's always a pleasure for us to go on holiday in the North of England the people are really friendly and there is far less traffic on the road and the food is just great in the pubs!!

North York Moors have loads of camping sites and Whitby is a great seaside town for the children.

Try South Devon, they have haven holiday camps which run events for children and are good value.
