Why Is Lamb So Expensive

When me & hubby were in the Lakes over Easter there must have been tens of thousands of sheep and lambs which made me think why is Lamb so expensive??

I only buy lamb when it's half price offer, in the Co-op, then I buy several legs for the freezer.
My freezer doesn't have legs, ferlew. What brand is yours?

I like leg of lamb [has to have New Zealand written through it] About nearly £20 though...so not often!
I have lived most of my life in the country (rural, village ) and my understanding from the farming community is that Retailers are responsible for the high cost of lamb. Supermarkets appear to set the price and other market traders follow.

Just a few thoughts. How come we are able to buy Lamb all year around.? What has happened to that which was known as Mutton.? I read recently of a butcher who was selling New Zealand lamb as Welsh Salt Marsh.

We are just being taken as lambs to the slaughter.!!

I don't want to start a new thread, but as this one is about meat may I tack this I have received this morning from HM government e-petitions, could I encourage anyone interested in a more humane slaughter of animals to sign the petition to contribute to it reaching the 100,000 mark (10,000 was already enough for it to be sent to the attention of the government)

The e-petition 'End non-stun slaughter to promote animal welfare' signed by you recently reached 66,604 signatures and a response has been made to it.

As this e-petition has received more than 10 000 signatures, the relevant Government department have provided the following response: The Government encourages the highest standards of welfare at slaughter and would prefer to see all animals stunned before they are slaughtered for food. However, we also respect the rights of the Jewish and Muslim communities to eat meat prepared in accordance with their religious beliefs. Recently, the Prime Minister has confirmed that that there would be no ban on religious slaughter in the UK. Both EU Regulation 1099/2009, on the protection of animals at time of killing, and the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations 1995 (WASK), as amended, permit slaughter without stunning to be carried out in accordance with religious rites. Within both regulations there are strict requirements on where, how and who can slaughter animals in accordance with religious rites. These requirements are monitored and enforced by Official Veterinarians of the Food Standards Agency to ensure that animals are spared unnecessary suffering, distress or pain during the slaughter process. The Government is aware that there is public concern about meat from animals slaughtered in accordance with religious beliefs being sold to consumers who do not require their meat to be prepared in this way. Currently, there are no specific EU or national legal requirements governing the sale and labelling of halal or kosher meat. However, where any information of this nature is provided it must be accurate and must not be misleading to the consumer. The Government believes that consumers should have the necessary information available to them to make an informed choice about their food. We are awaiting the results of a European Commission study on method-of-slaughter labelling which is due this summer. We will look at possible options in light of that report. This e-petition remains open to signatures and will be considered for debate by the Backbench Business Committee should it pass the 100 000 signature threshold.

I refuse to buy NZ lamb as it is Halal and not labelled as such.
Asked the butcher why it was so dear he gave a long winded answer .i just said that's a lamb excuse
If you think lamb's expensive, wait till you try venison.

The price of leg meat is a shin
In the capitalist system things are what the market will bear.

Anyway large supply only has so much effect on price, demand also has an affect.

Having a lot of sheep doesn't indicate how much it cost to get them there, or the cost of slaughter/distribution afterwards.
