I just accidentally hit the @ key when I was typing out http:// and noticed that it turned into http:////

So I tried again with http:@.com and it became http://.com

This worked in Firefox and IE, but I can't see anything about it on Google. Is it a deliberate/longstanding shortcut, or is it just my DNS server correcting what it perceives as a mistake (as indeed it was the first time)?

Its your browser correcting a mistake. If I type it in and go this is the message I get for http:@

"The address isn't valid

The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded.

Web addresses are usually written like http://www.example.com/
Make sure that you're using forward slashes (i.e. /)."

But did you put anything after it? http:@ returns an error page, just like http://
