The concept and execution of the advert is very poor. You can work out how it went wrong.
They wanted to promote their cheap Cider in the summer, and this being a World Cup year, a football themed advert seemed like a good idea. Unfortunately, a current player probably wouldn't be allowed to promote alcholic drinks (odd, as some have drinks sponsors on their shirts). A current manager would also probably not do it. Any decent recent ex-players are also employed as pundits. So they were left with recent ex-managers to choose from.
Which is how they whittled it down to the hapless Taylor. As the comments on here seem to prove, the demographic that the advert is aimed at, have no idea who Taylor is, so the joke (as feeble as it is) misses them, and the punchline falls on stony ground.
So what seemed like a good idea, quickly morphed into a dud.
