Aaaw, disgraceful ignorance about England's vital game! Perhaps you should have asked about Synchronised Swimming or Beach Volleyball, sandy. Answer is no, no, no. I make the real odds 3-1 AGAINST England. Regrettably I have bet on Uraguay and will make £300 if they win. My bet is hedged for a draw (I get my stake back). I hope I lose all my money but fear...

Patriotism along with financial sense :-)
Our local 'fete de musique' is going to become a 'fete de foot' as a big screen will be put up to show the France v another team match and 90 mins of music will be lost. What a f'ckin' disappointment. There is football on all the time, can't we have rest from it.....Rant over :o)
Dear sandyRoe,
Wow, a Best Answer (just) ty so much.
Re: modest gambling versus patriotism (anneasquith) they are totally different. The bet was logical as the bookies set the odds knowing that for many, the heart rules the head.
I would have gleefully have lost my bet had England won, honest.
Unfortunately Luis Suares had other ideas.
Oh, Rooney should never have been in the squad.

SIQ, your best answer nomination wasn't a half hearted endorsement. There's not many answers save another ABer money.
solvitquick agree totally, I'm all ready on Costa Rica to beat England @5/1 next match!
Ty sandy & bernie,
Kind regards,
SIQ
I feel obliged to say a final word on gambling. Generally I am against it as a mug's game.
I only bet as follows:
(a) From pocket-money after all household bills have been paid and this even includes a standing order for a cash sum into my savings account.
(b) I only have the occasional flutter on non-fixable football matches becase I know a lot about the game. My bet on Uraguay was so close to "buying money" that I gambled more than usual even tho' my winning was a bitter consolation indeed no consolation at all.
Unless you can afford to lose your stake without worry to you or your friends/family do not gamble. In the end you will lose so think and act in moderation as in all things.
That said, good luck to those who have bet on Costa Rica although I'll make up my mind about that later (in private - I'm no tipster).
Even as a footy fan, I agree that too much TV-time is being devoted to relatively unimportant matches - I don't want to watch 2 matches per day!
My final words, I hope.
Kindest Regards to All,
SIQ.
SIQ - spent a long time searching this out:

There is nothing wrong with betting aggainst the national interest:
Look at this guy : http://albert-kahn.hauts-de-seine.net/archives-de-la-planete/dossier/maisons-closes/

as a Froggie (I think) he bet against France winning the Franco Prussian War in erm 1870 and made an absolute bomb - I think he was in Prussia then. and went back to France with his winnings.... and photographed the world.

He survived unitl 1940 when his German frenz came back to Paree - and he just avoided being interned [ by dying ]

the site has amazing autochromes from 1900-1914

I mean ..... whadda guy !

[ theres a certain amount of irony in this entry ]
