Do you need permission to change the name of a house you own and, if so, who from?

I hated the name my house had when I first moved in. So I took down the name-board, turned it round, and painted a new one on the other side, then put it back. Nobody said a word. Nobody cared.

No....call it what you wish..postal address remains the same...ie street and house number...post code etc
Unless you are an isolated house in wee village, then I'd mention change to local post office for delivery man's attention ...
Many houses in the countryside don't have numbers, just names. In such cases Murraymint's advice is sound.
I found this article which explains the procedure. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/propertyadvice/4209325/Property-advice-How-to-change-the-name-of-your-house.html

If you Google your county and Changing House Name you'll find the current advice.

Interesting. , now if the house is in an estate and its say for sake its call rose gardens and you live in number 55003 can you change it then?
Two years ago we had to pay £50 to the council in Wiltshire to change the name of our house and they did all the paperwork in informing the departments and post office of the name change. Very efficient. Apparently there was no other way.

Presumably there are restrictions on certain words, such as swear words...
It would seem so, and rightly so, but I think the restrictions are more to do with there being more than one Rose Cottage, The Street, Anytown.

Who would want to name the home using a swear word?

The best house name I ever saw was 'The Cat & Custard Pot' - I have no idea why anyone would call their home that, but would love to know the story behind it.
My parents changed the name of their house un-officially by just altering the sign outside, now everyone knows the house as their name choice, even the postman.
