why does my female cat hiss at her female kitten so much?

I have a 3yr old female cat.When she had kittens a year ago we kept one,a female also.She was brilliant with her.We also have a 5 yr old male tom cat who is no bother at all.The mother started to hiss occasionally at the kitten months ago,even when the little one was just walking into the room,or eating.We thought it was because she hadnt been spayed so we had that done but it has made no difference at all.Half the time she will still lay nxt to her baby and sleeep etc,the other half she is hissing and spitting quite badly at her.Any reasons why?

I have 4 cats,two are brothers and the other 2 are sisters and they behave in the same way,sometimes sleep and eat together and other times hissing,growling and wrestling each other,. Don't worry,its normal,cats really don't "love" each other,they would actually prefer not to live with other cats. Domestic cats are under alot of stress sharing houses and streets with so many other cats,they are much better suited to be on their own or maybe a pair. The only cat in the wild that lives in a group is a lion,all the others are solitary,so are our cats.

I guess that even cats have dysfunctional families!
