I think there may be bats living in my roof. Is this a problem? (I'm too nervous to go up and have a look!)

Contact the RSPCA and ask them to investigate. If they are nesting you may not be able to move them.
You are lucky - bats don't often make their home in occupied buildings. To put your mind at rest, bats pose no health problem, and they won't eat your woodwork. As they eat woodworm beetles, they can be welcome guests. Bats are protected and it's illegal to kill or injure them or disturb their resting place. Call your local authority for advice.
