Why wont my Scandisc , scan ???

Whenever I try to use either scandisc or defragment ( ? ) , the programme starts to run , stops and tries again. his goes on until a message ' tried ti scan disc 10 times , continue trying ? ' appears. So I hit the try again and same thing happens. Nomatter how long this goes on for , scan disc or defrag will not run ...... why?????

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.paul, based on a discussion I had the other day, I would suggest that you have a program running. When it changes the contents of your hard drive, however little, the scan/defrag program restarts its operation. Possible culprits are screen savers, anti-virus programs etc. I am not sure how to make sure there is nothing running, but I am fairly sure that is the cause. Hope this helps.
This has been answered a few times before but i can't find any of the previously answered questions so give this a try....open the computer up in safe mode (usually you hold down F8 and this will bring up a dos type screen with numbered options) then once windows has finished booting as normal you should be able to run scandisk and defrag....It may well be worth either creating a restore point or doing a registry back-up depending on your version of windows, before you go about the above procedure.
