I see it as purely an extension of 'Hero Worship' really, picking up on strong characters who have a rich history, maybe something one can only imagine for yourself.

It isn't a new idea either, the earliest reputed gay icon is said to be Saint Sebastian.

I think the singer Anastacia might be a bit of a gay icon as well. Gay icons tend to be ultra femanine, well coiffured and with lots of make up. I expect that it is no coincidence that a lot of drag artists emulate such women.

Jeffa - Anastacia is a gay icon (as far as I know) and not a lesbian icon. I only know this from a friend of mine who went to one of her concerts and said that a large portion of the audience was comprised of gay men.
