Meter Reading Job. A Con?
I've just filled out an application form for employment with a gas/electric meter reading company (Meter-U). I have just read their employment information and the company are expecting successful applicants to hand over 520, which would then be re-imbursed weekly over the first three months of employment. I would have to 'beg, borrow or steal' this amount of money! Does anyone else on AB have any experience or advice about this company? Many thanks in advance.

The pay is minimum wage. You use your own vehicle. They tell you that they pay a mileage allowance and that the inland revenue allow 45p/mile tax free. So you think that is what you are going to get for using your own vehicle to do the job.
I covered 7683 miles in 8 months and they paid me £1094.68 so thats an average of 14p per mile. They claim that the tax man will give the balance. They do not!! What they do is multiply your mileage by 45p then deduct the monies that meter u have given you and then they deduct the balance from your earnings. So basically you get 20% tax relief in my case on 2362.67 and so that is a cery long way of what Meter-U tell you.
So you earn minimum wage, you use your own car, your own telephone and believe me they want to hear from you daily. You have to "run Comms" daily at your own expense and you are not classed as working at this point. So you ARE working but for FREE and it's costing you money to do so.
You need to plan your schedule in your own time (unpaid) and this can take hours per day! You provide at your own expense batteries for torches. In my case average of £5 worth per week. Pens etc YOU buy.
This is not a job. This is you subsidising their business.
DO NOT DO IT!!! DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THEY TELL YOU. I HAVE TOLD YOU THE FACTS. FACTS THAT I HAVE LEARNED THE HARD WAY
