Scroll lock

I've seen a question on this already, but the answer did not quite fulfil my question. What is scroll lock for? I know what it does in ms excel, but keyboards had a scroll lock button before spreadsheets were even around, what is it's use? Thanks.

It is originally from DOS days for scrolling capabilities, but has little/no use in Windows O/S's these days except to turn the LED on and off :-)
