A couple of years ago the Tour of Britain came near to where we live en route, so we went along where we waited for around an hour while the crowd cheered the passing police motorcycle outriders to relieve the sheer boredom, until the cyclists finally whizzed past - 30 seconds of action, blink and you missed it
Roy - no I haven't got a link, but it's the sporting event with the largest audience, if you added up all the spectators along the road side on each stage - that's why I said, "not on a single day". I believe the largest audience for a one day event is the 350,000 that attend the Indy 500.
Estimates suggest over a million people watched it today. I can believe that. Easily a thousand people just near where I was. The atmosphere was incredible and while the policemen got a lot of cheers I don't think it was from boredom.
Same thoughts as you joeluke,Tour of Britain (to much hype) came through our town a few years ago and it was a case of 'blink and you missed it ',only good thing about it was that the entire street was resurfaced beforehand, and the extinct ill fitting manhole cover we'd complained about several times was removed!
Bit like in York Mags when they held Royal Ascot there. The street we had complained about for years was suddenly resurfaced before the Queen was driven down it...........
