The clue leads to 2 words which overlap (3 letters in the middle) ; consists of clues to the 2 overlapping words, in either order; one of these is normal, but in the otrher the cryptic indicationrefers only to the full word minus the overlapping portion! ......here goes! .....

ironiest, in the sense of irony = creamy? Probably as in colours.

Wordplay appears to require Warn = ron... best I can make sense of that is "ready or not", but I'm not sure about that. (and then i[ce]+ron+ i)

Anyway, the only word that fits is "ironiest".
The answer is IVORIEST, a slightly questionable superlative of the adjective IVORY - word play is VOR (Shakespearean, perhaps meaning 'warn') I ('one') after I ('bit of ice'). Azed does say in the preamble that 'one superlative form may be seen as slightly fanciful'...
Ah. That makes more sense. No wonder I couldn't find that... put should have seen "perhaps warn = vor".

Thank you BOTH very much - ironiest was the only word I could find that fitted, but ivoriest is perfect!
