NHS Scotland has banned the use of the ward dad in a maternity handbook so as not to offend gay couples and replaced it by partner? It is ridiculous. What do others think

sp - not sure how all this relates to the word "dad", but continuing the current line, how about a woman who obtains sperm from an anonymous donor? What do you call him?
I notice that the OP left the discussion very early in the proceedings, and has not reappeared.

He or she was very wise...
venator

I would call him a sperm donor.

A 'dad' is a man who raises a child. A man who teaches his child, encourages, supports, protects, and pays for his child.

Someone who deposits some sperm into a cup, is a progenator.

It takes a lot more to be a dad.
Surely the best thing would be to not print the pamphlet at all. That way there's no chance of anyone being offended.
The NHS is one organisation that is particularly zealous about being PC.

The other week I was shocked to discover that I am no longer a patient but a 'service user.'

shakes head sadly
'service user' has been in place for a long time. It's been about 10 years since I worked in a hospital and it was in use then.
"Once again I need to ask...how is someone's relationship status going to be affected by this website? "

It isn't sp. Once again I say I was continuing the debate as widened by naomi. But actually this issue is so crass as to be laughable.

By the way, what's now wrong with "patient"? (definition: A person receiving or registered to receive medical treatment). Who does that exclude?
// Who does that exclude? //

People not receiving or registered to receive medical treatment NJ.
We wouldn't want them to feel left out.
Indeed not, ludwig, indeed not. Perhaps they should be invited into hospital for an elective labotomy just to make them feel part of mainstream society. I think I'll have to join them soon if this nonsense gets much worse !! :-)
