Anyone know of any good visual identification websites for different species of spiders found in th uk? we had a marvellous one in our kitchen window for ages, named Martha (don't ask how we ascertained this) but now she's dead n' gawn (smallest grave i ever dug [and yes, i've dug a few]). I would gravely like to know her type.

Try this link, www.glaucos.org.uk/arachnida.html I name our spiders also, if you find the one your looking for, post back.
Sorry, don't know why the link never worked, but if you Google 'British Spiders', you should find it.

I have found Nick's Spiders very useful

If the spider was in a web outside your window, it would most likely be Araneus diadematus but if it was inside your house, the most likely candidate is Tegenaria gigantea
