Whilst I appeared some minutes ago of being able to use this site - I have unfortunately done something wrong.

I am on Windows 8 with APPS and firefox Mozilla - however, when I was on a site much earlier in the evening - I thought it too slow and RESTARTED.

When I go back onto my desktop everything is gone (that I have been working on)

Anyway proceeded to put all the sites back on after signing in and passwording. Very quickly a popup comes up on the desktop saying you are on temporary therefore you cannot get access to your files. (Something like that). I logged out again and everything has gone again.

Start by checking how many accounts are registered on your PC. (Even though there's only you using the computer, you might have one or more standard accounts, as well as your administrator one). Maybe you're logging into the wrong one?

Hi Chris - have done what you said but when I log back in with my password it says WELCOME and a little circle. I know I am going back to the "bad"site when it says PREPARING WINDOWS and only 3 icons come up.

On my own site I had maybe 30 icons.

You are right tho when you said maybe there is another account - this was created some time ago when i needed to use a library internet and maybe that is where the fault lies because the outlook/hotmail site looks like the library one. Is there anything else you can advise. Thanks

I have to admit to being out of my depth here. Hopefully ChuckFickens (who came back to AB after many months away last night) will be around later on. If I see him posting I'll ask him to take a look at this thread. (He's AB's undisputed Technology expert).

thanks anyway Chris.
While you await chuck; try taking the cursor top right to loh in with your password. That should open your icons.

Tambo I am not with you sorry. What site should I take cursor etc.

I do think I am going to have to get the guy back who installed it. I have contacted him via email and he is perplexed too. It is very difficult to describe anything in black and white.

Any sites I want to go onto ie here or hotmail etc I have to log in every single time. And it does say that I am a temporary user - this is where the problem lies (it won't let me sign out of the temporary user per se).
You sign in top right, then your icons will show.

on this page top right gives you OPEN MENU, firefox start page

progress of ongoing downloads and so on

Don't know where to place cursor if you mean this page or do you mean for me to do something on desktop.

"On my own site I had maybe 30 icons."

Jenny, can I just clarify what you mean by "site", please?

Anyway, it sounds pretty much like you've fallen foul of the Windows 8 temporary profile "feature" :-)

Luckily, this is fairly easily fixed, and there are numerous pages of instructions available:

I think I know what you mean - unfortunately they are not the icons I mean - I am referring to all on my personal desktop.

I have earlier on signed in and signed in and out several times but as I said before - a popup comes in and says you will not get in to your files as you are a temporary user - I can't seem to get out of temporary user.
When you get your computer guy in you can tell him that the solution to your problem appears to be here

but I'd certainly not recommending trying it yourself. (I'm reasonably computer-savvy but I'd have to study that for quite some time before feeling brave enough to actually do it!)

Jeffa and to everybody else - I mean my own icons on the desktop. Site is the wrong word.

Haven't looked at the link but will have a glimpse but may be afraid to do anything to make it worse.
