Ww1 - Cosat Of Arms And Equipment

I am researching some names on the war memorial in our town, a soldier lost his arms and equipment due to neglect, part of his punishment was to pay for the loss. Has anyone any idea how much this would have come to, he was a private.

Though this is an American example, it may give you some idea - the costs for an infantryman in the UK shouldn't have been too much different. Take the 1915 value of the UK pound as being around US$4.75

Thank you Heathfield, if thew figures given are roughly the same for British soldiers, it would have taken the poor man over 5 months to pay back, at 1 shilling and sixpence a day! In fact he probably died before it was paid off.
