Elderly, have a look in related posts at the bottom of this page - lots of ideas below. Unfortunately cats love freshly turned soil..... a water pistol's the kindest way to put the cat off. (At least it's your own cat, not someone else's).

Hi, in my area they use small plastic bottles filled with water. Dont know if it works but a lot of gardens use this method
