I think the most popular addition to diet for most people is taking cod liver oil, in one form or another. It would appear that Omega-3 may be the most effective/helpful solution. Have a look on this FAQ link

There certainly are plenty of "Natural and Herbal" remedies that companies will be prepared to sell to you, but none I would suggest would stand up to scientific trials.
The value of omega 3 lies more in it´s ability to counteract cardiovascular disease rather than any effect on rheumatic disorders.
Personally I would take Ibuprofen, but the correct route would be to see you GP.
The bottom line is, that it is your money and you can spend it on whatever you choice.

my dad used to swear by glucosamine and chondroitin (i think that's how you spell it) as many people do. however i took them for a good 12 months and found them no use at all.
i currently take high strength omega 3 which is basically cod liver oil, not for joint pain but for heart and brain. it says on the bottle: 'omega 3 can help maintain concentration levels, brain function and a healthy heart'. doesn't mention anything about joints.
best thing you can do is keep as active as you can and take pain killers when you need to.
