Has anyone out there done a dissertation before? You see I am in the middle of doing a dissertation and my subject is totally new to me. There is nothing on the internet for me to work with and i'm having difficulty. I know my university doesn't like to help you as it is your own project so I asked my tutor to point me towards a website, she replied no because thats part of my dissertation to find my own materials. However I really have looked everywhere and I cannot find anything on the subject. I spent a week doing nothing and I cannot find one thing. I've cried, stressed, cant sleep. Im thinking of dropping now. What should I expect from my supervisor? I didnt ask for help I asked for direction to a website that would help me.

Considering just giving up now.

Have you considered the old fashioned method of going to a library and finding a book on your subject? Sometimes it is easier to take in the written word than deciphering search engines and flipping round electronic pages.
Or there is the somewhat sneaky method of finding a second year student in your subject, buying them a beer or three and asking them for the aid your tutor declined.
I'm sure once you are started it will begin to flow - don't despair.
Do you have a specific subject to write about....as in a set question...or can you change it about?

I was allowed to pick my own and found it changed two or three times according to the material i was finding x
Try the library

If you told us exactly what you're meant to be writing your dissertation on, we might stand rather more chance of being able to help you!

It's not always easy. When I was writing my Mathematics dissertation (in Sheffield) I had to do a great deal of research to establish that the two books I required were only available from one specialist library in London. (They were the only copies). Further, one of them was written in 18th century German, using a notation which was unfamiliar to me but (after a considerable struggle) I still managed to incorporate part of its content into my thesis.

There are at least 4 mathematics graduates regularly posting on this site, together with people who've got degrees in most of the sciences. If you tell us what it is you're working on, we might be able to point you in the right direction.

A dissertation usually represents a culmination of previous years work and research. I don't understand how you can be doing a project on something about which you say you know nothing, and that it's totally new to you..
