I can't find green specifically relating to oceans travel but a greenhand is a novice or inexperienced sailor

I don't know- it was just a suggestion.
You may want to try Crossword section next time- there are quite a few expert solvers in there who can be relied on to give very fast, accurate answers with good explanations
