Aerial lead from socket into aerial "in" on back of DVD recorder. Another aerial lead from aerial "out" into back of TV. Then HDMI from DVD recorder to TV

The answers are probably 'Yes' and 'Yes' but without knowing the make and model of the DVDR (and preferably of the TV as well), together with the exact nature of your problem, it's hard to be more specific.
Does it have built in Freeview?

If yes, you need to connect the aerial to it. If the TV also has freeview, you will then need to connect the aerial out from the recorder to the tv.

If it doesn't have freeview, then you will need to connect the freeview box or sky box or cable box to the recorder.

You then need to connect scart out from the recorder to the tv (or if the recorder has hdmi out, the connect that to hdmi in on the tv if the tv has it.)

It's an LG recorder with Freeview. The TV is a Technika model also with Freeview.
