For The Medics Out There

Since having a catheter fitted in August 2014, I have had two or three urine infection found by my GP following a waster sample. Treated by penicillin. No gret problems.
This weekend had some weird feelings in the wrong area, including pain, and to top it all my urine was pretty blood-stained so went to an out of hours GP Service at local hospital.
He thought it was not wise to do a urine test as it had too much blood in it. More penicillin (2 tabs for next 7 days - no problem).
My real question is why is blood in the urine a sign of infection? Other infections don't bleed, why this one? Might it be a tear or spot of some kind in the urethra/bladder?
Final note : not sure if its relevant but I am male

It may not be....there are other conditions which may causes blood in the urine other than infections.
\\\\Might it be a tear or spot of some kind in the urethra/bladder? \\\
Yes it might.
///Other infections don't bleed, why this one? ///
Sooner or later in the process of infection, nearly all infections will affect the adjacent area and cause bleeding, how quickly and how obvious the bleeding will be, will depend upon the area affected.

Thank you cupid.
As I said this is not the first time this has happened in the past twelve months but the amount of 'the red stuff' seeemed so much heavier this time so gave me a litle more concern than before.
And Sqad, many thanks for your input - succinct as usual. :)
The cather was changed 24th Jul as appeared blocked (bloodclot), again on 31 (same reason). On 9th Aug I thoughtI had a hat trick but district nurse simply deflated the 'holding' balloon, reinflated after reposition and a bladder wash came out clear. Less than 48 hours later the clots were sufficient in mass that I could not empty the leg bag I use as the clots were blocking the valve! Hence the visit to hospital GP.
Still feels and looks better today so fingers crossed.
