Spider webs

Sometimes when walking I feel like I have walked into a strand of a spider web, and I have strands stretched from one side of my garden to the other. Is there any explanantion for how they construct these things?

I am terrified of spiders and when I walk into one of those 'lets see how big a web I can make' webs, I am normally stood next to my daughter, so I have to say 'Oh, look what the clever spider did'! instead of 'why can't you go and live in someone elses b****y garden!
