I wonder what nothing sounds like. I hear children playing, TV blaring, cars revving. Then, in the dead of night, when the children are sleeping and the TV is resting and the cars are at their journeys end is that silence I hear?
An engine thrumming louder and louder, the tic tic tic of a metal widget click click clicking, a rush and roar in time to nothing, all taking the place of the day time noises.
Is it really all in my head or is it the sound of nothing?
Very few places on earth that you can experience absolute silence.
Apart from the tinitis which I have suffered with for many years, I can hear the seconds on the battery clock, the humming of the strip light the beat of my heart, even my breathing, the wind rustling the trees.
The nearest I've come to silence was in Malaya one night. We were 'up country' the moon was bright enough to read by and for us to see for miles over the plain below us. Not completely silent, but memorably beautiful.
