I was in the same position. Waking up every night at 3.00am and not being able to go back to sleep.
Coming downstairs and watching tv for hours and spending the rest of the day exhausted.
I stopped eating sugar because I was putting on weight but the sleeplessness stopped almost immediately.
Give it a try - you have nothing to lose.

You are bound to be getting some sleep or you'd now be in a coma. You simply do not notice.
But I sympathise. I can normally drop off ok, but my mind/body wakes me before it should, which I think is the reason I can no longer concentrate properly, find it hard to learn new things, am basically not as bright as I once was. Rightly or wrongly I blame age. If you find an answer to the lack of sleep issue let us know.

A pint of water will work a lot better than a pint of Stella. Stella can keep you awake or worse. Diazepam and alcohol do not mix well.
What works for me:
Decent blackout curtains.
Setting two alarms. Clock-radio and phone. If you can rely on the alarms you can sleep.
Preparing clothes, tools and food for the morning. No worries about finding things.
TV set to a local music/news radio station. All I need to worry about is which roads to avoid.
