Why, despite their vast wealth, does there appear to be anyone in a position of influence in the Arab world who hasn't been educated abroad?

and why are Arab countries so rubbish at education?

Because they all like to come here to be educated don't they? They like the Western "culture".

A lot of the wealthy Arabs went on to Sandhurst to train as officers and gentlemen after Uni. it was thought to give them a bit of class and grounding for their eventual rise to greatness in the Arab business world. More money than sense.

A few years ago the property/economic boom in Dubai hit a bit of a low spot. Saudi Arabia was quick to take advantage of the situation and use the redundant manpower to build a massive education facility (for girls) outside of Riyadh. It houses literally thousands of pupils. In the past Saudi sent their students to the UK. Maybe they don`t need to do that anymore.
