Base facilites were shared with American forces and on one occasion, a marine turned on a tap and nothing came out. I said it must be u/s, which in the RAF meant unserviceable but the marine thought I meant it didn't work because it was American. Within seconds he had a knife at my throat asking me what the f did I mean. Two of my friends dragged him off me and after an explanation he eventually calmed down. The old saying two countries divided by a common language was certainly true that day.

Two weeks after we were married in 1968 I used a coffee perculator for the first time which had been a wedding present. Didn't realise at the time but it had been faultily wired up with wire being trapped between body of pot and the base. Result - an enormous explosion with a sheet of flame which sent me flying over to the other side of kitchen! Not hurt but very badly shaken and scared of electricity ever since especially when plugging in new appliances.
A few years ago I almost choked to death at home on a tough piece of roast beef, my lovely husband saved my life doing the heimlich manoeuvre on me which he had vaguely remembered seeing demonstrated on a works First Aid course (he said he was hardly paying attention to it at the time, he was so bored!) I still get flashbacks ....
